WHAT IS ALFALFA?

​

Alfalfa (known as lucerne by the rest of the world) is a specific type of grass that has been grown and used as fodder for livestock for thousands of years with the first recorded writing of this herb from Phiny the Elder in ancient Greece 2,000 years ago. Alfalfa is actually an herb that holds medicinal powers for humans. Alfalfa has high nutritional content particularly high in protein and fiber and is thus the perfect choice for cattle. Hay resembles a clover and has lovely purple flowers on it in the spring.

WHAT IS ORCHARD GRASS?

​

Orchard grass or cat grass as domestic cats love to roll in the stuff is a type of grass that grows very quickly and has high sugar (i.e. carbohydrate) content, which makes it sweeter than most other grasses, and thus, more appetizing to domestic livestock. Orchard grass likes to grow in cooler temperature, thus making it a great grass for the winter months. Orchard grass is often grown in conjunction with a legume such as alfalfa as it seems to grow better when mixed.
